Literary Tendency of Victorian Literature Special...

Literary tendency of Victorian literature: special reference to Lord Alfred Tennyson and Robert Browning 1.1 An Introduction to Victorian Period: The Victorian era is generally agreed to stretch through the reign of Queen Victoria (1837-1901). It was a tremendously exciting period when many artistic styles, literary schools, as well as, social, political and religious movements flourished. It was a time of prosperity, broad imperial expansion, and great political reform. It was also a time, which today we associate with prudishness and repression. Without a doubt, it was an extraordinarily complex age that has sometimes been called the Second English Renaissance. It is, however, also the beginning of Modern Times. During the Victorian†¦show more content†¦John Stuart Mill discussed the relationship between society and the individual in his long essay On Liberty (1859). During the late 1800s, a pessimistic tone appeared in much Victorian poetry and prose. Tennyson considered the intellectual and religious problems of the time in his long poem In Memoriam (1850). Matthew Arnold described his doubts about modern life in such short poems as â€Å"The Scholar-Gypsy† (1853) and â€Å"Dover Beach† (1867). Arnolds most important literary achievements are his critical essays on culture, literature, religion, and society. Many of his essays were collected in Culture and Anarchy (1869). An art movement indicative of this period was the Pre-Raphaelites, which included William Holman Hunt, Dante Gabriel Rossetti, Christina Rossetti, and John Everett Millais. Also during this period were the Impressionists, the Realists, and the Fauves, though the Pre-Raphaelites were distinctive for being a completely English movement. Queen Victoria reigned over an immense British Empire, and much English literature expresses the experience of Imperialism, from one point of view or another. Perhaps the finest imperialist writer of the late 1800s and early 1900s was Rudyard Kipling. He was a prolific writer of prose and poetry, and he was enormously popular. Kipling was the first English writer to be awarded the Nobel Prize for literature, in 1907.

The Presidency Of The United States - 1401 Words

The Presidency While some nineteenth century presidents, such as Abraham Lincoln, wielded great power and significantly influenced the future of the United States, many were really just caretakers eclipsed in prominence by various industrialists and robber barons. The modern American presidency was actually the creation of Theodore and Franklin Roosevelt who by different means expanded and strengthened the office of the President of the United States. He stated it was proper to dedicate a portion of the Gettysburg battlefield as a remembrance of the men who had fought and died there. Abraham Lincoln was viewed as great leader based on his humble background and use of â€Å"story telling† that he had used to influence others into seeing the views he had. One of the most famous actions that Abraham Lincoln took towards the end of his last term and even his life was the abolishment of slavery. He accomplished this first through the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation. â€Å"The Emancipation Proclamation didn t immediately free any slaves because it only applied to territories not under Lincoln s control. The actual fact is that legal freedom for all slaves in the United States did not come until the final passage of the Thirteenth Amendment in December of 1865. Lincoln was a strong supporter of the amendment, but he was assassinated before its final enactment.† Even with Abraham Lincoln being assassinated before the enactment of the 13th Amendment, which ultimately abolished slavery, he is still regarded as the man who ended slavery in the United States. My Family Journey Into the Past Essay Relationships among family members are among the most complex relationships that define us as humans. Because it’s too important to us we tend to know more about history of our family ancestry. My curiosity to know more about my family led to visit someone who is very special and dear to my heart my grandmother Sarah. My grandmother lives in a small house close to the lake with my grandfather were she keeps a lot of memories about her life in every single part of this house. We sat-down in her warm small salon. She gave me a cup of hot tea and some cookies. I asked my grandmother to tell me about our family, because I know that Sarah is the oldest member of my mother’s side of the family so she probably knows the family history better than others. In addition to that I was always interested in listening to what my grandmother always had to say because my grandmother was always very honest, straight, talkative, and has most influenced the rest of the family. Everything was going good in their life until the Syrian Israeli war started between the two countries in 1967. All the men above the age of 18 were forced to join the Syrian army. Her father joseph and her uncle Kareem went to fight in the war. My grandmother felt sad and upset because her dad left them to join the army.
